Heating load
Monthly loads
Design loads compared with average operating loads in each month, in BTU/h. Dashed lines show design loads; solid lines show operating loads. Uses the sample monthly weather and a representative daily cycle.
Heating load
Cooling load
Your year at a glance
Average operating loads in BTU per hour. Orange shows heating; blue shows cooling. Split month headers show their share of the combined load.
What changes the load?
Bars share one scale. Peak loads are preliminary estimates.
How your windows affect cooling needs
Illustrative window load through a summer design day. Mixed exposure is assumed; the curve is not measured from Google Solar.

Keep a starting point, then change insulation or temperatures to compare the same home.
Starting point: sample home with R-22 attic and R-11 walls.
Shifts all monthly outdoor averages. Design-day temperatures above change peak loads only.

Example assumes an electric heat pump for heating and cooling. Confirm both efficiency ratings on the same SEER2/HSPF2 basis.

How this estimate works
Peak loads use simplified heat transfer, assumed solar gain, air leakage, residents, and duct adjustments. Seasonal costs use a sample monthly temperature profile with a representative daily cycle, not peak load multiplied by operating hours.
Savings compare the starting home and existing equipment with your changed home and proposed equipment. Lifetime savings add the annual differences using the selected energy price growth. This is gross energy savings: installation, financing, maintenance, replacement costs, and discounting are excluded.
Solar data helps describe the roof. It does not establish conditioned floor area, insulation, windows, or HVAC design conditions. This preliminary comparison does not replace a Manual J calculation or select final equipment.
