Tell us what’s happening
What is your heat pump doing?
Is the problem in heating, cooling or both? Knowing when it happens helps guide the checks. You don’t need to diagnose the equipment.

- Weak heating or cooling
- The system runs, but the home or one part of it no longer reaches a comfortable temperature.
- Persistent ice
- A light frost can occur in heating mode. Ice that stays or builds up, especially with weak heat, needs investigation.
- Unexpected backup heat
- Backup heat runs more than usual or the house stays cold. An AUX message by itself does not establish a fault.
- Unusual noise or running
- A new sound, repeated stopping or a change in how the system runs.
What happens next
Find the cause. Review the repair. Check the result.
Investigate the concern
Checks depend on the symptom: defrost operation for persistent ice, heating/cooling changeover for a one-mode problem, and backup-heat controls, airflow or electrical checks when performance changes.
Explain the finding and proposed work
We explain the finding, the proposed work and its price. If further testing, a part order or another visit is needed, we discuss that before you decide.
Approve the work, then check operation
You choose whether to proceed. After the approved repair, we check operation and explain what was done. Timing depends on the work and parts required.

Getting ready
Questions before your visit
Review the common questions and use the symptom checker for guidance before requesting a visit. A technician will need to diagnose the cause.
What should I prepare before the visit?
If available, note whether the problem occurs in heating, cooling or both, any thermostat message and when it started. Clear safe access to indoor and outdoor equipment; leave panels closed. We confirm your address and needs during follow-up.
Does ice or an AUX message mean the heat pump has failed?
Not by itself. Some frost and defrost cycles can occur during heating, and backup heat can be part of normal operation. Ice that persists, changed backup-heat use or a house that stays cold should be investigated in context.
What if it heats but will not cool, or cools but will not heat?
Tell us which mode is affected. Checks may involve controls and the reversing valve that changes the system between heating and cooling. The symptom alone does not identify a failed component.
Can the repair be finished during the visit?
That depends on the finding, access, parts and the work you approve. We explain whether a part order or return visit is needed rather than promise every repair can be completed immediately.
What does the diagnostic visit cost?
The HVAC diagnostic visit is $79.95. Sign up for the Maintenance Plan and we’ll waive the diagnostic fee. We quote any proposed repair before you approve the work.
Does sending my phone number book a visit or send a text?
No. The hero phone field carries your number into the full request form below. Submit your contact details to request a follow-up. An appointment is arranged after availability is confirmed; automated visitor texts are not currently connected.
