What air exchange does the home need?
Review sources and existing exhaust before assuming a whole-home device is needed.
- Kitchen and bathroom exhaust
- Local exhaust helps manage moisture and sources where they occur.
- Balanced air exchange
- Plan how outside air enters and indoor air leaves the home.
- HRV or ERV options
- Review the home, climate and moisture conditions alongside the proposed equipment’s role.
Before you agree
What should the plan include?
Review what the work addresses, the equipment and connections involved, and what is excluded. The proposed work and price should be clear before you approve it.
Filtration, humidity and ventilation guide
- Intake, exhaust and ducts
- We’ll identify air connections, locations, routes and filters.
- Controls and outdoor conditions
- Explain operation when outdoor smoke, pollen or humidity affects incoming air.
- Airflow and care
- Include installed airflow checks, control demonstration and service access.
What affects the work and cost?Intake and exhaust locations, duct routes, air connections, controls and balancing affect installation. Suitable service access and routine filter care belong in the scope.
Know what happens next
Before and after the work
Describe the rooms and existing equipment
Describe the rooms that feel stuffy and when you notice it. We’ll check the fans, vents and any existing ventilation equipment.
Review the proposed arrangement
Ask what the equipment transfers and which moisture concerns it will not address.
Learn operation and filter care
Understand outside-air controls, replacement filters and ongoing service needs. Review any separately priced supplies, cleaning or further work before approval.

Before you decide
Questions before deciding
Review the common questions and explore room airflow using volume and an assumed air-change rate. Whole-home ventilation design and code requirements need a separate assessment.
What should ventilation handover demonstrate?
How supply and exhaust are intended to operate, how airflow is checked and how to use the controls and care for filters. Balanced and exhaust/supply-only arrangements have different effects. Room-volume arithmetic is a discussion aid, not a whole-home ventilation design or compliance check.
Does ventilation replace a particle filter?
No. Air exchange and particle capture have different purposes. The plan should explain each filter’s role.
Can an ERV solve every humidity concern?
No. Moisture sources and cooling operation still need consideration. Dedicated dehumidification may be appropriate.
Should it run the same way during outdoor smoke?
Follow current local public-health guidance and the appropriate equipment operating guidance. Ask about the controls in your arrangement.
