Dual-Fuel Heating Systems

Compare heat-pump heating with retained furnace backup as one matched system. Your equipment, utility costs and comfort goals determine whether dual fuel fits.

Plan how a heat pump and furnace work together.

RJ Sam’s works on the heating and cooling already in your home, across brands. We assess the equipment and explain compatible repair, care or replacement options.

Two heating sources

Heat pump and furnace operation

The controls switch between the equipment according to the system’s design and settings. Changeover can account for heating capacity, outdoor temperature and operating-cost priorities.

Electric heat pump

Provides cooling and heat-pump heating within the proposed operating arrangement.

Heat pump options

Furnace

Provides fuel-fired heat for the conditions selected in the system design and settings.

Furnace options

The equipment must be compatible and the controls set up for that combination.

Dual fuel when replacing an air conditioner

If you already have a furnace and are replacing the AC, dual fuel may be worth comparing. It can also suit someone who wants heat-pump operation while retaining fuel-fired heat for selected conditions.

We review the furnace, ducts, electrical supply and proposed heat pump before recommending the arrangement.

Equipment and installation

Dual-fuel costs and maintenance

Compare the full installation and expected operation with an all-electric option.

Installation price
Include the equipment, controls and supporting work.
Utility rates and fixed charges
Consider the rates you pay. Retaining a gas furnace may also mean retaining a gas account and its fixed charges.
Care for both systems
Discuss maintenance for the heat pump and furnace.
Operating settings
Understand how the proposed equipment will switch between heating sources.

Before you decide

Dual-fuel planning questions

Review the common questions and compare heat-pump and furnace energy costs using your own assumptions. Actual seasonal bills depend on your home, weather and operation.

Is there one outdoor temperature at which every dual-fuel system should switch?

No. Changeover depends on the proposed equipment’s heating performance, controls and the operating-cost assumptions used. Compare a working furnace/failed-AC situation with a full replacement, including fixed gas-account charges and care for both systems. The running-cost tool is not a universal switchover recommendation.

What should I compare before choosing dual-fuel systems?

Compare both fuels under explicit operating assumptions. A running-cost estimate supports the discussion but does not set the correct changeover strategy for the home.

Can my existing furnace stay?

Sometimes. Its condition, blower, controls and compatibility with the proposed indoor and outdoor equipment need review.

Will dual fuel cost less to run?

The comparison depends on the proposed equipment, operating settings and your utility rates, including any gas-account fixed charges. Review those alongside installation and maintenance costs.
