Hot water

Tank, tankless or heat pump water heater?

Compare your busiest hot-water routine with the space and utilities available for installation. Each type needs to be selected for the household it will serve.

Compare around demand

Water heater selection criteria

Storage tank

Busiest-hour demand compared with first-hour rating.

Tankless

Simultaneous flow at the required temperature rise.

Heat pump tank

Hot-water demand plus air, temperature, drainage and electrical conditions.

These are starting criteria, not a sizing recommendation or equipment specification.

How much hot water a storage tank can supply

Gas and electric tanks keep heated water ready and replenish it after use. Capacity and recovery rate affect how they handle busy periods.

Compare demand during the busiest hour with the heater’s first-hour rating. Daily use alone does not establish whether consecutive morning showers will work well.

How much hot water tankless can deliver at once

Tankless equipment can continue heating while demand stays within its output. Several fixtures operating together may exceed that output.

Compare simultaneous hot-water flow with performance at the required temperature rise. Colder incoming water can reduce available flow at the chosen hot-water temperature.

Water still has to travel through the pipes. A tankless unit alone does not make every tap instant.

What a heat-pump water heater needs

A heat pump heater moves heat into a tank and can use less electricity than a conventional electric tank. Many models also use electric elements, depending on demand and operating mode.

Suitable air, surrounding temperature, drainage and electrical supply matter. Consider fan sound and cooling of the surrounding space as well.

Look at the full installation price

Fuel lines, circuits, vents, drains, piping and access can make one option more involved than another. Ask for the complete installed price. Discuss maintenance, water quality and the current written warranty too.

Tell us when you use the most hot water

Tell us how many showers run together, whether you fill a large tub and when the current heater falls short. Those details give the comparison a specific household need.

Before you decide

Put the guide into practice

Review the common questions and explore simultaneous fixture use with the hot-water planning tool. A water-heater recommendation also needs demand, temperature-rise and installation checks.

What are the main tradeoffs to put side by side?

For a tank, compare peak-hour delivery and recovery; for tankless, simultaneous flow at the required temperature rise and scale care; for hybrid storage, air/temperature, recovery, sound and condensate. Every option also needs a comparison of installation work, maintenance and actual coverage.

Which hot-water details belong beside the equipment choice?

Busy-period use, available utilities, incoming-water conditions, equipment space and access belong in the comparison. A different heater type can change the work around it.
